Design Blog - week 4

This week’s design takeaway came straight from spending more time inside Illustrator and finally slowing down to really understand how some of its core tools work instead of just using them out of habit. The video I watched focused on two tools that, on the surface, seem like they do the same thing, but in practice feel completely different once you actually understand how they’re meant to be used. Watching it made me realize how much workflow matters just as much as knowing what a tool does.

Check the video out yourself! : Patherfinder vs Shape Builder by Dansky (thanks for the recommendation Mr.Williams)

One of the big strengths shown in the video is how one of these tools gives you a lot of speed and structure when you already know exactly what result you want. It works well when shapes are clean, aligned, and planned out ahead of time. The downside, though, is that it can feel a bit rigid. If you’re experimenting or trying to think visually while you work, it’s easy to overshoot and create extra shapes you didn’t intend to make, which then slows you down instead of helping you move faster.
The other tool discussed in the video really shines in a more hands-on, exploratory way of designing. The creator breaks down how you can literally “draw through” shapes to combine or remove areas, which makes the process feel more natural and intuitive. That freedom is a huge plus, especially when working on custom typography or icons. At the same time, the video also points out how that freedom can become a drawback if you’re not careful, since it’s easier to accidentally merge or delete something you didn’t mean to, especially when working quickly.

What I liked most about the video is that it didn’t treat one tool as better than the other. Instead, it explained how each one has its own place depending on what kind of project you’re working on. Seeing the tools used side by side with clear examples helped everything click for me. It made me realize that mastering Illustrator isn’t about memorizing shortcuts, but about knowing when to use the right tool for the job. After watching, I felt way more confident choosing between them instead of defaulting to the same option every time.
