Creativity blog - week 2
Welcome back y'all! To another weekly creativity blog! And we’re back with another round of SCAMPER, picking up exactly where we left off with the same object from last week my everyday backpack. The same one that’s basically been through it all with me: school, travel, random creative outings, and those 'I swear I packed that' moments that happen way too often. I didn’t expect SCAMPER to make me think this hard about something I use literally every day, but here we are. But for this week were going to continue with the adapt, and modify parts of SCAMPER.
For the Adapt part, I tried to imagine the backpack in different environments or lifestyles and how it could shift to fit them. One idea I liked was adapting the backpack for hybrid work or travel by giving it convertible straps so it could switch from a backpack to a messenger bag to even a sling. Same bag, just changing shape depending on the situation.
Another adaptation I thought about was a climate-reactive exterior. Imagine the fabric adapting to weather conditions automatically water-repellent when it’s raining, breathable on hot days, reflective at night. It’s the same bag, but way more aware of what you need from it in the moment.
This part is always where things get fun. For Modify, I focused on the internal layout. Instead of just adding more pockets like every bag ever, what if the interior dividers were magnetic and repositionable? You could modify the inside of your bag depending on whether you’re carrying camera gear, textbooks, sketchbooks, or clothes for a weekend trip. The backpack becomes this customizable little ecosystem instead of a fixed box.
For the Magnify side, I looked at one of the best features of any good backpack: storage. But instead of making the bag bulkier, I imagined magnifying the space using expandable layers. A slim daily backpack that can unzip and accordion outward into a travel-sized pack. It keeps its clean silhouette, but when you need more room, the bag can quite literally grow with you.
