Design Blog - week 1
Hey y'all! Welcome back to my blog, and this week I was tasked with creating a post on something that I learned about this week, and what better way than taking a deeper dive into the world of color theory. Cause recently I've had some insight into the world of color theory and it's vast knowledge, and It’s one of those things we always hear about, but actually taking the time to understand how to use it changes on how we think about using the very concept that is "color". And what better way to understand it better than to turn to some helpful people on the internet to help us better understand it.
So this week I came across a video by Pikat (linked here if you’re curious: Check it out!) and it broke down color theory in a way that finally clicked for me. Instead of thinking of colors as just “bright” or “dark” or “cool,” I started to see them as tools for storytelling. Every palette has its own emotion calm blues and greens can relax the viewer, while sharp reds and yellows push urgency or energy. What I really took away from the video was how intentional designers are with every shade they choose. It’s not just about looking pretty; it’s about guiding the eye, setting the tone, and evoking emotions without them even realizing why.
I’ve been experimenting with this in my own work, trying to incorporate palettes that not only look clean but also say something about the project. Like, instead of defaulting to a safe choice, I’ve been asking myself: what do I want someone to feel here? Am I building excitement? Do I want them to feel grounded? Should this design feel modern, or nostalgic? Framing it that way made me realize color isn’t just decoration, it’s communication.
Overall, it’s been a reminder that design is way more than just the surface. The little choices stack up into something bigger, and color, out of all things, might be the most powerful of them all. Definitely something I’ll be carrying into my future projects.
I was also intrigued in the way a color in a design could make you feel something. I watched a few videos, clips of cool movies and just everything around me. I realized that I could feel different emotions with the colors presented in the presentations. I've never really thought that much into it until I started in this class. I can't wait to start designing my own designs to make others feel something.
