My top 3 Contenders
As an aspiring graphic designer, I’ve been thinking a lot about where my portfolio should live. I want a space that feels clean, professional, and ready for me to gush about every project without feeling cramped. Theatrics? Yes, please but nothing so over-the-top that it drowns out the actual work. My main focal point is my designs and my designs only, while it is fantastic to have the animations, and all the juice behind the portfolio I think what suites me best is the great simplicity of letting me vent about my work, and allow the spotlight be on my work.
So I’ve been looking at three popular options: Adobe Portfolio, WordPress, and Wix. So here's what I've researched.
Adobe Portfolio
Pros:
-
Smooth integration with Adobe Creative Cloud. If you’re already deep in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign (like me), the workflow just feels seamless.
-
Clean, no-fuss templates. Minimalism is the name of the game here, letting your work shine without wrestling with too many design options.
Cons:
-
Not the most customizable. Great for simplicity, but if you want funky animations or advanced layouts, you’ll hit walls pretty fast.
-
Only “free” if you’re already paying for Creative Cloud. Otherwise, it’s not exactly the budget-friendly choice.
WordPress
Pros:
-
Ridiculously customizable. Themes, plugins, custom code if you can dream it, you can probably build it here.
-
Scales easily. Whether you start small or eventually add a blog, store, or more pages, WordPress can grow with you.
Cons:
-
Steeper learning curve. It’s powerful, but you’ll spend some time figuring it out, especially if you stray into custom coding territory.
-
Ongoing maintenance. Themes, plugins, and security updates need regular check-ins unless you want your site to get glitchy.
Wix
Pros:
-
Drag-and-drop design freedom. You can move things exactly where you want without touching a single line of code.
-
Built-in extras. Animations, video backgrounds, and all kinds of fun elements are ready to go from day one.
Cons:
-
Not as portable. If you ever want to move your site somewhere else, it’s a headache to migrate.
-
Can get pricey. The free plan has limitations, and unlocking all the good features means paying up.
So… which one’s my pick?
Honestly, Adobe Portfolio feels like the best fit for me right now. I don’t need mountains of customization just a clean, professional place to showcase my work and write in detail about each project. Plus, since I’m already paying for Creative Cloud, it’s basically included. The cost-efficiency alone makes it hard to ignore, and the simplicity means I can focus on the art instead of fiddling with widgets all day.
While adobe portfolio may be my choice to begin with later down my career I do want to switch to a better site of course. Possibly a site like WordPress and some other candidates, but when it does come to it I will do as such. But for now I like where I am at and especially where my work needs to be for it to best shine.
