When I started on my search for companies where to do my case study with I ended up looking into Ben & Jerry’s. They’ve done more than just make creative flavors with funny names and crazy flavors. Back in 2020, during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, they didn’t do what most brands were doing with vague posts or one-line statements. They dropped a full-on statement titled “Silence Is Not an Option.” It was direct, bold, and detailed, calling out white supremacy and pushing for real policy change. This detailed article stated what the Ben&Jerry's team felt and their truth and their take on the recent events with white supremacy.
What stood out was how aligned it felt with who they are. Ben & Jerry’s has always had that activist voice built into their brand, but this one hit different. It wasn’t performative, it was action-backed. They used their platform to educate, link to causes, and push for legislation, not just make noise. And to be real, it showed how a brand can use its voice without diluting its message just to keep everybody comfortable.
I think stuff like that reminds us that creativity doesn’t only live in design and products, it shows up in how you speak, where you stand, and who you stand with. These types of statements can make or break what type of impact you as a human being or a corporation, can make on the heinous acts, and how you can shift the very world you live in into a world of peace and cooperation.
