Creativity exercise - week 1

Welcome back, y’all to the weekly creativity blog! This week’s exercise is all about stepping back from your own mind and seeing things from a different perspective. Sometimes when we’re stuck on a problem, we just circle around the same ideas over and over. But what if you looked at your challenge through someone else’s eyes? That’s exactly what today’s exercise is about.

The exercise is all about how you would think someone else would do in your position? So I thought it would be fun to pick five well-known people, imagine how they’d solve a creative problem I’m facing, and see if it sparked something new. The problem I liked was “how to make a project stand out when I’m running low on ideas.” Here’s what I came up with:

  • Steve Jobs – He’d probably strip everything back, make it simple, and focus on one strong idea. 'Don’t overcomplicate it. One big, bold thought is all you need.'

  • Elon Musk – He’d take the craziest, biggest version of the idea and ask, 'Why not make it 10 times bigger?' Even if it sounded impossible, he’d find a way to make it happen, or just pour a bunch of money into it.

  • Beyoncé – She’d pour energy and passion into every detail, making the project feel alive. 'if you own it and perform it like no one else can, people will notice.'

  • Bob Ross – He’d remind me not to stress so much, to let mistakes guide the process, and to enjoy creating. 'There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.'

  • Albert Einstein – He’d flip the problem on its head, asking, 'What’s the weirdest, most unexpected way this could work?'

Doing this exercise made me realize that sometimes the answer isn’t about being “right,” it’s about seeing how others might twist and turn the problem in ways I wouldn’t think of. Even just imagining their approaches opened up new directions I hadn’t considered before, and thinking that way is the key to opening your mindset to more possibilities and more opportunities for success.
